Planning an Alternative Hen Party in the Lake District
Updated: Oct 20

The best alternative hen dos in the Lake District swap sashes and shots for lake swims, wood-fired saunas, mountain adrenaline and a slow morning on the mat. The bride gets a weekend she'll actually remember, and everyone goes home feeling better than when they arrived.
Wellness hen parties and sober-curious celebrations are growing fast. More brides want time with their favourite people, not a night they need three days to recover from. The Lakes are made for that kind of weekend: big holiday houses, open water on the doorstep and fells that do the mood-lifting for you.
Whether your group is wild swimmers, nervous first-timers or a mix of both, here's how to plan an alternative hen party in the Lake District that works for everyone coming to the hen party.
1. A private hen party yoga session with Sonder Yoga

Start (or end) the weekend with a yoga session brought straight to your holiday house. No travel, no studio, no one feeling self-conscious about their downward dog.
Sonder Yoga runs hen party yoga for groups from 5 upwards, designed for every ability, from total beginners to regular yogis. We arrive with matching mats, set the scene with candles and music, and finish with Yoga Nidra, a deeply restful guided relaxation that most people describe as the best nap of their life. Every session is unique and created with the bride in mind.
Choose the length that suits your plans:
The Sonder Hour (60 minutes): a gentle flow and relaxation, perfect before brunch.
The Sonder Experience (75 minutes): a longer more energetic flow with time to properly unwind.
The Sonder Ritual (90 minutes: fully bespoke, built around the bridal party but will include a deeper meditation section.
Morning sessions set a calm tone for a busy day. Evening sessions are a lovely way to wind down before dinner.
2. A lakeside sauna at Hide Sauna, Windermere

Sauna culture has arrived in the Lakes, and Hide Sauna is one of the most beautiful spots to try it. Tucked away on the quieter south-west shore of Windermere, it's a handcrafted timber sauna, with a huge panoramic window looking straight out over the lake.
Heat up then cool off in the cold plunge, under the outdoor shower or, for the brave, with a dip in Windermere itself. Repeat until everyone is glowing!
Hen tip: book a private session so it's just your group. Private hire fits up to 8, so larger groups can split into two back-to-back slots. Sunrise and sunset sessions are especially magical.
3. Pottery painting at The Kiln House, Ambleside

For a slower, creative afternoon, head to The Kiln House on Church Street in Ambleside, a pottery painting studio and bar right in the middle of town. Pick a piece, pour a (large) glass of wine and paint. No artistic talent required.
They glaze and fire everything for you, so you can collect later or have it delivered. A personalised mug, plate or trinket dish makes a far better hen keepsake than another plastic tiara. It's also the perfect rainy-day plan, which in the Lakes is never a bad thing to have up your sleeve. Ambleside is also a lovely place to explore before and after with a multitude of bars and shops.
4. Paddleboarding on Windermere

Nothing gets a group laughing and bonding like a paddleboard session. England's largest lake has plenty of places to hire boards or book a lesson.
Lessons and hire: Low Wood Bay Watersports, between Windermere and Ambleside, offers board hire and guided tours, with wetsuits included.
Giant group boards: their Mega SUP sessions put 4 to 8 of you on one huge board, which is guaranteed chaos and the best photos of the weekend.
Stretch and paddle: for something gentler, Low Wood's guided Stretch and Paddle is an hour of stretching on your board, and can be booked as a private group.
First-timers will get on the water quicker (and fall in less) with an instructor.
5. England's longest zip line at Honister

For the adrenaline-lovers in the group, head north to Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale. Its zip line opened in August 2026 and, at 1.2km, it's the longest in England!
To reach the start you climb the Via Ferrata Classic, following iron rungs and ladders along the old miners' route, then fly back down the valley in around 60 seconds. It's a proper bucket-list moment and the photos are unbeatable.
Prefer something gentler? head into Grizedale Forest, between Hawkshead and Coniston, for Go Ape's Zip Trekking Adventure. It's 3km of dual zip lines across the valley, and because every zip runs side by side, you can race the bride all the way down. Ages 13 and up.
6. A guided wild swim with Wild Wellness, Coniston

If one thing will have the group buzzing all weekend, it's a cold-water dip. Wild Wellness runs small, carefully held swims and experiences beside Coniston Water, led by Natasha, a qualified open water swimming guide and outdoor wellbeing coach.
It's a gentle, supportive introduction for nervous first-timers, and a beautiful way to start the day for seasoned swimmers. Expect cold water, wide skies and a proper warm-up afterwards. Bring a dryrobe and a flask.
Tips for planning an alternative hen party
Ask the bride first. A quiet word about her ideal weekend can help you narrow down your choices.
Mix the energy. Pair one big adventure with one slow, restorative activity so everyone gets something and you cater for different energy levels within the group.
Book early. Saunas, giant paddleboards and big holiday houses go quickly, especially May to September.
Have a rain plan. It's the Lakes after all! Pottery painting and in-house yoga work in any weather.
Let the house do the work. Bringing activities to you, like yoga or a private chef, means less driving and more time together.
